WHY KILN DRIED FIREWOOD?


Most people think that all wood burns the same. If you tried to burn "green" wood you will see that it is actually hard to burn because the moisture content.
A cord of green wood weighs in at about 5000lbs. After drying in our kiln that same cord weights about 1600lbs less.
The reason is because most of the moisture is removed by our kiln.
Even if the cord of wood was properly seasoned our kiln would still remove about 50% more moisture.

That’s why it’s important to have dried wood for your fireplace, stove or restaurant oven. Most people don’t know that there is a difference in dried wood.


Air Dried Wood

Air dried wood is exactly that - wood that is dried by air. Sometimes it is dried for a few months and sometimes it’s dried for years.

Some tree companies dry it indoors and some dry it outdoors.

Of course, it makes more sense that wood dried inside and protected will be a better burning wood than wood dried outside where it can get rained on.

Unfortunately most part-time firewood companies do not have the room or money to store wood indoors.
It really comes down to the amount of moisture in the wood.

The less moisture the hotter, cleaner and longer it burns. Seasoned firewood can also be covered with mold or have insects in it.

There is another type of firewood that is better - kiln dried wood.

Kiln Dried Wood

Wood that is dried in a kiln can have a moisture content of less than 15%, which is unheard of for air drying.

The air is controlled and able to circulate around the wood for maximum drying. As you can see, this takes special equipment and can be expensive.

It also takes energy to remove the moisture from the wood, an estimated 1200 BTU per pound. This creates the perfect wood for burning and cooking.


Cost vs Quality

Firewood that has moisture in it uses most of its energy to dry the water that is in the wood.

Considering that one kiln dried piece of firewood creates the same amount of heat as 3 wet logs.

This saves our customers a lot of money and provides a perfect fire every time.
